Taps - cutting speeds and lubrication/cooling

Cutting speeds

The cutting speed vcdescribes the instantaneous speed of the cutting point under consideration in the cutting direction. It is specified in m/min. As the cutting speed has an influence on the production time and therefore also on the work productivity, there is generally an interest in setting it as high as possible. On the other hand, however, the cutting speed is limited primarily by friction and the associated temperature development during thread cutting.

The factors that are decisive for the choice of cutting speed therefore include, among others

  • the material to be machined
  • the cutting material and the geometry of the tap used
  • the use and type of coolant or lubricant

The recommended cutting speeds for different materials for each tap can be found on our product pages at BAER Online-Shop .

Lubrication and cooling

High temperatures are generated during the cutting process, which place great strain on the tool cutting edge. Constant cooling is required to reduce this. Lubrication, in turn, is necessary to reduce friction between the workpiece and the tool.

There are different types of cooling lubricants available to achieve these two goals. The use of the right type and quantity of cooling lubricant is not only important for the service life of the tool, but also enables problem-free chip removal and ensures optimum results. The choice depends on the material and the machining process.

We recommend the following types of cooling and lubrication:

Dry and compressed air

  • (cooled) compressed air is used to promote chip flow
  • particularly suitable for gray cast iron

Emulsion

  • Oil-water mixture
  • is mainly used in thread machining

Thread cutting oil

  • suitable for most materials
  • achieves excellent thread surfaces and tool life

Thread cutting paste

  • also suitable for thread forming
  • advantageous for horizontal cutting direction
  • ideal for large dimensions and through holes

MMS - Minimum quantity lubrication

  • Cooling by air-oil mixture, which is fed to the point of action as an aerosol
  • can be supplied externally or internally
